Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Richard Grimmett

Sergeant Major Richard Grimmett was born in Hinton, West Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1998 and attended Armor One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky earning the Military Occupational Specialty of 19K, Armor Crewman.

SGM Grimmett’s previous assignments included the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division where he served as an Armor Crewman and Tank Gunner and deployed to Bosnia Herzegovinia in support of security and stability operations. The 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Republic of Korea where he served as a Tank Gunner. The 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division where served as a Tank Gunner and Tank Commander and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After selection to serve as a Drill Sergeant, SGM Grimmett was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 81st Armor Training Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky.

SGM Grimmett was then assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division where he served as a Platoon Sergeant and deployed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. SGM Grimmett was then assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division where he deployed twice as a First Sergeant in support of Operation Spartan Shield followed by an assignment to the 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command on Rose Barracks, Germany where he served as the NCOIC for the Combined Arms Training Center. After selection for and completion of the USASMA at Fort Bliss, Texas, SGM Grimmett was assigned as the Operations Sergeant Major for Operations Group at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. Most recently SGM Grimmett served as the CSM for the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor regiment at Fort Stewart, Georgia where he deployed in support of the EUCOM RAF. SGM Grimmett’s military education includes the Basic Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course, the United States Army Sergeants Major Course, Drill Sergeant Course, and First Sergeant Course. SGM Grimmett also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College.

His awards and decorations include the, Bronze Star Medal (3rd Award), Meritorious Service Medal (5th Award), Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal (5th Award), Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.

SGM Grimmett is member of the Cavalry and Armor Order of Saint George.

SGM Grimmett is married to Candace. They have one son Patrick who is an Army Veteran (Cavalry Scout) and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.


Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Richard Grimmett currently serves as command sergeant major for the U.S. Army Evaluation Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.
