Cmd. Sgt. Maj. William A. Thompson

CSM William A. Thompson was raised in a small fishing community in South Port, North Carolina. He entered the Army in 1993, and he graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky as an Armor Crewman. CSM Thompson has served in green tab positions from Team Leader to Brigade Command Sergeant Major.

CSM Thompson served with the 64th Armored Regiment (Desert Rogues) in Fort Stewart, Georgia; I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord; 37th Armored Regiment (Bandits) Friedburg Germany; 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Black Horse) Fort Irwin; 41st Infantry Regiment (Rifles); Headquarters, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team (Ready First); 6th Squadron, 1st United States Cavalry (Dragoons) at Fort Bliss, Texas; Multi Forces Organization (Task Force Sinai) in Sinai Egypt; Joint Modernization Command at Fort Bliss, Texas; and U.S. Army North (5th Army) Joint Base San Antonio. Additionally Thompson served as an advisor in Russia at the Mikhail Frunze Combined Arms Academy in Moscow, Russia.

His deployments include Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti; Operation Vigilant Warrior in Kuwait; Operation Iraqi Freedom I, II, VI, VII, IX; Operation New Dawn; and Operation Enduring Freedom.

CSM Thompson is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with Valor; Bronze Star Medal (4 Oak leaf Cluster (OLC)); Meritorious Service Medal (7 OLC); Army Commendation Medal with Valor; Army Commendation Medal (5 OLC); Army Achievement Medal (5 OLC); Army Good Conduct Medal (9th Award); National Defense Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal (3 OLC); Iraq Campaign Medal (5 Campaign Stars); Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1 Campaign Star); Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development (#4); Army Service Medal; Overseas Service Medal (#4); NATO Medal; Multinational Force and Observers Medal; Joint Service Accommodation Medal; Combat Action Badge; and two Drivers Badges. Additionally, he is a recipient of the Order of Saint George.

CSM Thompson is married to the former Amy Martinez of Edinburgh, Scotland. They have four children and six grandchildren. Heather - Law School; Cpl. Kia Thompson U.S. Army; Staff Sgt. Talon Thompson U.S. Army; and Neive University of Texas El Paso.


Cmd. Sgt. Maj. William A. Thompson currently serves as command sergeant major for the U.S. Army Evaluation Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.
