David Brant, director of the University of
Texas at Austin Center for Agile Technology, said he was honored to
receive the medal — a rarity for a civilian.
Brant and his team — to which he gave the credit
— work with Fort Hood units through the Army’s University XXI
program.
“We try to help III Corps and OTC try to make the
most effective use of the technology that is becoming available to
them,” Brant said.
St. Barbara is the patron saint of the artillery
branch, so Brant received the medal from Col. Dennis Pastore,
director of OTC’s Fires Test Directorate, located at Fort Sill,
Okla.
Pastore said the saint keeps watch and protects
members of the field artillery branch.
“We hope she does the same for you,” he said. “I
wish I could give you more because all you do for us is
unbelievable.”
The center’s team works to build software to test
software that is still being built, Brant said.
“We’re always chasing a moving target and that’s
exciting,” he said of the work.
The Operational Test Command plans, conducts and
reports the results of rigorous operational tests, assessments and
experiments in order to provide essential information for the
acquisition and fielding of war-fighting systems.
Pastore said Brant’s work has helped construct
better tests, which ultimately puts a better product in the hands of
soldiers. The medal was just one small token of appreciation for
that.
“It’s something to remember the branch by because
we are never going to forget you,” Pastore said.
