High Resolution Radar Engineering students from the University of Texas at El Paso were invited to a hands-on demonstration of the Sentinel Safety Surveillance Radar at the Integrated Test and Evaluation Directorate here.

As the presentation of the radars capabilities began, support contractor Malcolm Weston provided insight about the operational use of such a highly technical machine.

“The students were able to get a rare and close look at the inside of the radar,” Weston said. “This allowed them to better understand what it is actually capable of.”

“When students are sitting in class, it is hard to grasp what this kind radar is really about,” he said. “This trip allowed them a visual of what they are studying.”

ITED, a test directorate of the U.S. Army Operational Test Command located at Fort Hood, Texas, is the Army’s premier support to meet its fielding of an integrated network capability to the operating force. The organization works to provide soldiers the very best equipment obtainable for deployment and mission execution to secure a safe return back to the United States.

Under the direction of Col. Dave Wellons and in cooperation with UTEP’s Dr. Berenice Verdin, the directorate embraces the opportunity to support future engineers by hosting school field events such as this one.
